MUTIS' MISCELLANY
Mutis' miscellany is a DIGITAL ARCHIVE, developed by Taller dos puntos, to share and connect five scientific documents from Jose Celestino Mutis collection of the National Library
of Colombia: Educated surgeon from Tomás Goulard's; Universal Dictionary of Physics, Mathurin Jacques Brisson's; Physical-mathematical letters of Theodoro de Almeyda; Recueil des plantes by María Sybilla Merían; and Description of plants by Antonio Josef Cavanilles.
It is a platform that invites people to navigate different combinations between the documents and to re-visit them through new approaches and associations. It contains different pieces made with texts and images taken from the five books, using different styles and typographic designs. They are organized into: Scientific Verses, Lyrical Descriptions, Glossary, Visual Extracts, Plant Manifesto and Random Machine, an interactive button that allows visitants to generate pieces in real time, combining the contents randomly.
The books were summarized and illustrated, proposing new approaches to the contents, authors and contexts of creation.
The project seeks to promote the idea of miscellaneous to rethink the concept of archive and offer diverse visual and poetic possibilities from randomness decontextualization, translation and combination.
In addition to the digital platform, we will print the pieces combining photopolymer plates and digital printing techniques.
